Our practice, located in Phoenix, Arizona, and welcoming patients from Ahwatukee, Gilbert, Scottsdale, Mesa, and Chandler, specializes in the mommy makeover procedure. This transformative set of treatments is designed to restore your pre-pregnancy body, boost your confidence, and help you feel more comfortable in your skin.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a highly personalized surgical procedure that addresses the unique changes a woman's body undergoes during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Unlike a single procedure, it combines various surgeries to correct and enhance areas most affected by motherhood. This is typically done to address the breasts and abdomen, although it can be expanded to include the vagina, buttocks, and any area where stubborn fat is located. By customizing the included treatments for each patient, we can carefully target the desired areas of the body without performing unnecessary procedures.

What are the Benefits of a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover delivers significant aesthetic benefits, which also lead to improvements in self-esteem and body image. Common benefits of a mommy makeover include:

  • Restored breast fullness and position
  • Removal of excess abdominal skin
  • Tightened abdominal muscles
  • Removal of stubborn fat
  • Improved body contours

What Does a Mommy Makeover Consist Of?

The specific procedures included in a mommy makeover vary by individual but commonly focus on the breasts and abdomen, the areas most impacted by pregnancy. However, other procedures can also be included based on the patient’s cosmetic goals. Most mommy makeover procedures include some combination of the following techniques:

1

Breast Enhancement

Fluctuations in weight that occur before and after pregnancy, as well as breastfeeding, can cause significant changes to a woman’s breasts, leaving them saggy or deflated looking. That’s why mommy makeover surgery generally includes some sort of breast enhancement procedure, whether it is breast augmentation with breast implants, breast lift or both.

2

Tummy Tuck

Almost all patients have a primary concern of excess skin on the abdomen, stretch marks and weakened/stretched abdominal muscles. Therefore, the tummy tuck and/or liposuction procedures are commonly performed. With abdominoplasty, Dr. Leverett can help patients regain a firmer midsection by repairing greatly weakened or separated abdominal muscles and removing excess skin from the region.

3

Liposuction

Dr. Leverett performs liposuction when it is necessary to remove excess fat from the patient’s flanks (love handles) and/or midsection. Liposuction can provide a patient with a flatter abdominal profile and better contouring of the torso. Dr. Leverett performs this procedure by inserting a cannula, or thin, hollow tube, underneath the patient’s skin. Through the cannula, Dr. Leverett vacuums out stubborn fatty tissue, contouring the patient’s flanks and/or abdomen.

4

Labiaplasty

Pregnancy and vaginal childbirth can stretch and sometimes permanently alter the shape and size of the labia, leading to discomfort, irritation, and a change in appearance that some women find distressing. Including labiaplasty in a mommy makeover allows for a comprehensive approach to restoring the body's appearance and function post-pregnancy.

Questions For Your Consult

Am I A Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

Ideal candidates for a mommy makeover are women who have completed their families, as future pregnancies can alter the results of the surgery. You should be in good health, at a stable weight close to your ideal weight, and have realistic expectations about the outcomes. It's crucial to have a support system in place for your recovery period and to be able to take the necessary time off from work and childcare duties. In general, women who are unhappy with their post-baby bodies and meet the criteria above are suitable candidates for the life-changing mommy makeover plastic surgery.

What is the Best Time for a Mommy Makeover?

When it comes to mommy makeover surgery, timing is key for optimal results and safety. It's best to wait until at least six months to a year after your last pregnancy or after you've finished breastfeeding. This allows the body to transition beyond the pregnancy phase. Furthermore, you should postpone the mommy makeover surgery until you are done having children. Future pregnancies can reverse the benefits of the mommy makeover surgery. Otherwise, there is no “perfect” age for a mommy makeover. If you are interested in reversing the effects of childbirth and breastfeeding, patients of nearly all ages can benefit from the mommy makeover procedure.

How Much Does a Mommy Makeover Cost?

A mommy makeover is tailored to your specific needs, so costs will vary depending on the number of procedures you elect to have. During your consultation Dr. Leverett and his staff will discuss the various costs for each cosmetic procedure. To help make cosmetic surgeries more affordable and accessible to his patients, Dr. Leverett offers financing through CareCredit®, Patient Fi, and Prosper Healthcare Lending. Our office also accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, cash and cashier’s checks.

What is the Mommy Makeover Procedure Like?

What Happens During Mommy Makeover Surgery?

Mommy makeover surgery is performed under general anesthesia and may take several hours, depending on the complexity and number of procedures involved. Dr. Leverett will make incisions as discreetly as possible, often in natural body creases or areas covered by underwear or bikinis, to minimize visible scarring. For breast procedures, incisions are typically made around the areola of the nipple or along the crease beneath the breast. For tummy tuck surgeries, incisions are typically made in the belly button and along the pubic line. Through these incisions, Dr. Leverett can remove excess skin and fat while sculpting the surrounding anatomy to the desired results.

How Dangerous is a Mommy Makeover?

All surgical procedures come with certain risks, but Dr. Leverett is highly skilled and takes every precaution possible to minimize any surgical risks. These include bleeding, infection, poor wound healing, blood clots and the possibility of a need for revision surgery, among others. By following the guidelines provided by Dr. Leverett, you can rest assured that your mommy makeover procedure will be performed safely with minimal risks of complications. To minimize the risks associated with a mommy makeover, patients should:

  • Avoid smoking
  • Walk around the house in the days following surgery
  • Avoid taking Advil, aspirin and other over-the-counter medications that cause blood thinning
  • Eat healthy, well-balanced meals to aid the body in the healing process
  • Be extremely forthcoming with Dr. Leverett about lifestyle habits and past medical history
  • Follow Dr. Leverett’s instructions prior to and following a mommy makeover

How Long Does Mommy Makeover Surgery Take?

The duration of mommy makeover surgery depends on the number and type of procedures included in your mommy makeover plan. Generally, surgery can last anywhere from 3 to 8 hours. Dr. Leverett will provide a more accurate timeline during your consultation, tailored to your customized surgical plan.

What Do Mommy Makeover Scars Look Like?

Scarring is inevitable with any surgery, but Dr. Leverett's meticulous surgical techniques aim to minimize and conceal scars as much as possible. The appearance of scars will depend on the specific procedures and their locations but expect them to fade significantly with proper care and time, becoming less noticeable. Proper scar care, such as keeping the incisions clean and protected from the sun, can help optimize the healing process.

What is the Mommy Makeover Recovery Like?

How Long Does it Take to Recover from a Mommy Makeover?

Recovery varies by individual and the extent of surgery but generally requires 2 to 4 weeks off from work and regular activities. It's important to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for up to six weeks or as directed. Even after this point, it can take several months for residual swelling and other minor side effects to completely resolve, revealing your full and final results. Dr. Leverett and our team will provide detailed post-operative care instructions and support throughout your recovery. However, here are some guidelines to keep in mind for your recovery period:

  • Patients will need to have someone drive them to and from the surgical center.
  • Patients will need to wear a compression garment during the recovery period.
  • Patients may also have drainage tubes inserted under the skin to alleviate any fluid accumulation near the incision sites. Dr. Leverett will remove these a week or two following surgery.
  • Mommy makeover patients can generally return to work in two to three weeks and can resume exercise around the six-week mark.
  • Patients should be sure to keep all follow-up appointments with Dr. Leverett, so he can monitor their recovery and ensure that they are on the right track.

Post Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

How Painful is Recovery from a Mommy Makeover?

Patients may feel some pain or discomfort in the first one to two weeks after surgery, but this will subside as time goes on. They should take the prescribed pain medication as directed to help alleviate any discomfort. Patients may also experience swelling and bruising in the treated areas. Again, this will diminish with time. By the end of the first week, mommy makeover patients should be able to walk around the house more easily and frequently.

How Long After a Mommy Makeover Can I Drive?

You should avoid driving for at least 2 weeks or until you are off prescription pain medications and can comfortably maneuver the car, including emergency stops, without discomfort. Although many patients are eager to return to their normal routines after their surgery, it’s important not to rush through the recovery process. If you experience any discomfort while driving or performing other tasks, you may need to wait a few more days before you can return to them.

What to Wear After a Mommy Makeover?

Post-operative care includes wearing compression garments to minimize swelling and support the healing process. In the weeks that follow, we recommend choosing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that is easy to put on and remove without straining your surgical sites.

How Long Do Mommy Makeover Results Last?

The results of a mommy makeover can be long-lasting; however, they are not considered permanent. A mommy makeover cannot stop the effects of aging or prevent future changes in your body. Over time, factors such as gravity, weight fluctuations, and the natural loss of skin elasticity can impact the results of the procedure. To optimize the longevity of your mommy makeover results, it is crucial to maintain a stable weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise. Significant weight gain or loss can affect the contours of your body and may require additional procedures to restore the desired appearance. By following Dr. Leverett’s post-operative instructions and embracing a healthy lifestyle, you can enjoy the benefits of your mommy makeover for many years to come.
