A breast implant revision is a procedure performed to correct issues with breast implants, primarily capsulectomy or the shifting of the breast implants within the breast pocket. In either of these cases, the breast implants can be temporarily removed to correct the surrounding tissue before replacing the breast implants. Some instances may require a breast implant exchange that replaces the previous breast implants with new ones, but we try to preserve the original breast implant when possible.
When is a Breast Implant Revision Needed?

A breast pocket modification technique is used when the breast implants have shifted. To correct this, the breast pocket is reinforced with stitches to keep the breast implants in an optimal position.
A capsulectomy is needed to correct a capsular contracture. A capsular contracture is when the body responds to breast implants by forming scar tissue in the breasts, which eventually surround the breast implant to create a hard or uneven surface. This can change both the look and the feel of the breasts. During a capsulectomy, the breast implants and the surrounding scar tissue are removed. Then the breast implants can be replaced to restore the desired results.

What is the Recovery Time for a Breast Implant Revision?
Following a breast implant revision, it is common that the patient will see swelling for 4-6 weeks. If the incision was in the same place as the old scars, you will see similar scarring. However, if the incisions were placed in a new area, you will notice small scars when your body is fully healed. Patients should refrain from strenuous activity for 3-4 weeks.
