Open rhinoplasty is favored for more complex procedures, such as significant reshaping, reconstruction, or when precise manipulation of the nasal tip is required.

Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty, also known as endonasal rhinoplasty, involves incisions made solely within the nostrils. There are no external incisions, meaning no visible scars on the skin of the columella. This technique limits the degree of surgical access compared to open rhinoplasty but is less invasive, often resulting in a quicker recovery with less swelling.

How to Get Rhinoplasty Covered by Insurance

To perform surgery, Dr. Leverett will use either the open rhinoplasty technique or the closed rhinoplasty technique. The open rhinoplasty technique is used for more complex cases, and involves incisions in the columella as well as inside the nose. Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions inside the nose, eliminating any visible scarring. However, this approach is limited in its capabilities and is typically used for minor corrections.
What Do Rhinoplasty Scars Look Like?
The scars that develop after your rhinoplasty procedure will depend on the surgical techniques used for your surgery. The closed rhinoplasty technique only requires incisions inside the nose, which means there will be no visible scarring. The open rhinoplasty technique, however, requires an incision in the columella, resulting in a small scar. Many patients are pleasantly surprised at how well this incision heals, with any scarring being barely perceptible. Dr. Leverett makes every effort to minimize scarring and will provide you with post-care techniques to help the incisions heal optimally.

How Long Does a Nose Job Take to Heal?
Following a rhinoplasty, patients will have a splint on the nose that is removed five days following the procedure. Although not often, in certain cases patients may need packing inside the nose which is removed in two to three days. Depending on the necessary procedure, patients may have bruising under the eyes. Our patients start anti-bruising remedies prior to surgery to reduce bruising and often use topical products after surgery. Swelling is expected after surgery and gradually subsides. Most patients return to work, school, and other activities in seven to 10 days. You’ll look and feel “back to normal” approximately two to three months after your surgery, but it’s important to remember that residual swelling and subtle healing will continue for up to a year after your surgery.

The recovery process from rhinoplasty primarily involves managing discomfort rather than severe pain. Patients often describe feeling a dull ache or pressure in the nasal area, largely due to swelling and the placement of nasal splints or packing. This sensation is also compounded by the temporary congestion that follows surgery, making it feel similar to having a severe cold. Additionally, patients might experience sensitivity around the nose, and facial expressions or movements that engage nasal muscles may increase discomfort initially. The majority of patients find that the most significant discomfort subsides within the first week post-surgery, with a significant improvement after the removal of any splints or packing.

What Not to Do After Rhinoplasty
The success of rhinoplasty recovery hinges not only on following post-operative care instructions but also on avoiding certain activities that can jeopardize the results:
- Avoid Blowing Your Nose: This can increase swelling, cause bleeding, or disrupt the healing tissues. If you need to sneeze, try to do so with your mouth open to minimize pressure on the nasal structures.
- Avoid Strenuous Activities: High-intensity activities or any exercise that raises blood pressure can lead to increased swelling or bleeding. Gradually resume exercise as advised by Dr. Leverett, usually starting with light walks and avoiding contact sports for several weeks.
- Be Careful with Glasses: Glasses can exert pressure on the nose, potentially altering its shape during the healing process. Consider using cheek rests or switching to contact lenses during the critical initial weeks post-surgery.
- Protect Your Nose from the Sun: Sun exposure can cause discoloration and exacerbate swelling. Use high-SPF sunscreen and wear a hat when outdoors to protect your healing skin.
- Avoid Smoking: Smoking impedes blood flow and oxygen delivery, crucial for healing, and can significantly extend recovery time and increase the risk of complications.
How to Sleep After Rhinoplasty
After rhinoplasty, patients should sleep on their backs with their head elevated higher than their heart to minimize swelling and avoid putting pressure on the nose. Using a few pillows or a foam wedge can help maintain this position comfortably. Most patients can resume sleeping on their side or in other positions approximately two weeks after their surgery, but it’s important to check with Dr. Leverett before doing so to make sure that you are healing as expected.
How Long After Rhinoplasty Can I Wear Glasses?
Patients are typically advised to avoid placing glasses directly on the bridge of the nose for at least 4-6 weeks after surgery. If you must wear glasses, consider using cheek rests or taping the glasses to your forehead until it's safe to wear them normally.
How Long Does a Nose Job Last?
Rhinoplasty results are considered permanent, with the initial year of recovery being a period of significant change and settling. After this time, the nose's appearance should stabilize, offering a lifelong improvement.
