Silicone is FDA-Approved
The FDA has stated that silicone implants are safe for breast augmentation procedures in patients 22 years and older. Although there are potential adverse effects—as there are with most surgical procedures—studies have been conducted to sufficiently understand the potential risks, and it is widely believed that patients now have enough information to make an educated decision when choosing their implant type.
Ruptures May Not Be Noticeable
Unlike saline implants, if a silicone implant ruptures there is a much lower chance that it will ever become noticeable. This is because, in most cases, silicone gel will remain in the capsule of fibrous tissue that surrounds the implant. If the gel does escape the capsule, it will pose only a very low chance of health concerns. Ultimately, a ruptured silicone implant may cause pain or thickening in the breast, or an altered breast shape. However, it is not necessarily linked to breast cancer, reproductive problems or rheumatoid arthritis at a higher rate than saline implants.
