For many years, liposuction was the only option when it came to fat reduction procedures. Recently, CoolSculpting® has become a hugely popular alternative. Both of these procedures offer effective, long-term fat reduction when combined with healthy lifestyle choices that include regular exercise and a nutritious diet. However, they do have some key differences, which are important to consider when you are planning your fat reduction treatment.
The biggest difference between these two procedures is the treatment process. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that involves one or more incisions in the desired treatment area. Through these incisions, a small metal tube is inserted into the body, which will extract fat from the body using a vacuum pump. This process is performed using anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and safety. During the CoolSculpting® procedure, a CoolSculpting® device is placed on the desired treatment area. Then, it delivers cooling energy to the body to freeze and destroy fat cells. This process requires no anesthesia, incisions or any other invasive techniques. Although it may cause a pinch or cold sensation at first, a CoolSculpting® session takes only 30 minutes.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that may require a few weeks of downtime. Patients often take a few days to a few weeks off of work, depending on the extent of treatment. You will also have to avoid exercise and other strenuous activities for a few weeks until the body fully recovers. CoolSculpting®, on the other hand, requires no downtime whatsoever. In fact, patients often return to work and other activities immediately following their appointment.
Liposuction and CoolSculpting® are both treatments that can be used on many areas of the body. Although these treatments are best suited for patients who are close to their ideal weight, liposuction can sometimes produce more dramatic results. CoolSculpting® may be better for patients who want to achieve a more toned appearance without the surgery and scarring associated with liposuction. Liposuction produces instant results rather quickly since fat is removed during treatment. CoolSculpting® flushes destroyed fat cells from the body, so patients will notice a gradual improvement in their appearance in the weeks following treatment.
