Will My Breast Lift Make My Breasts Smaller?

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) in Phoenix, AZMaking the decision to undergo cosmetic surgery is a big one – and we understand that. At Body by Leverett, Dr. Leverett and his expert medical team members hear your concerns and consistently want to reassure you that you’re not alone in asking the tough questions.

One of our most frequently asked questions lately is “Will my breasts get smaller after a breast lift?” Let’s go over what a breast lift is and how it affects the appearance of your chest, so you can get a better idea of your potential results when you trust Dr. Leverett.

What Happens During Your Breast Lift

What makes a breast lift so appealing to our patients is that no volume is added to or taken away from the breast itself. This means that, unless instructed otherwise, no breast implants are introduced and no breast tissue or fatty tissue is removed from the breasts during your surgical treatment. Instead, the breasts are simply repositioned to a more youthful position on the chest and any excess skin that is contributing to a saggy appearance is trimmed away.

Research Shows You May Decrease in Cup Size…

What concerns a lot of our patients is the stories they hear about their friends or previous patients finding that their bras aren’t fitting the same following their breast lift surgeries. This theory was put to the test when researchers took a group of 20 women in their forties and tracked their bra size before and after a breast lift. Over the next five years, 19 of the 20 women found their bra size decreased by one cup.

…But This May Be Caused by Ill-Fitting Bras

While these results may sound compelling, doctors and researchers explain there may be a less sinister factor that comes into play. Studies over decades have shown that women oftentimes don’t wear the correct size bra to fit their breasts. When women find their breasts are sagging and have excess loose skin that causes their droopy appearance, they tend to upsize their bras for a more comfortable fit throughout the day. When that excess skin is trimmed away, there’s less tissue to fill in the more roomy cup size, and women get the illusion that their breasts have shrunken.

Consider Small Breast Implants With Your Lift

While Dr. Leverett and other board-certified plastic surgeons may recommend you consider your pre-operative breast size a cup smaller than the bra you currently wear, there are other solutions that can provide you the results you desire without having to compromise. We encourage patients who are worried about their breast size decreasing during a breast lift to consider a very subtle breast augmentation in conjunction with their original procedure. A very small breast implant can supplement the little volume “lost” during your breast lift, giving you the confidence boost you deserve without having to sacrifice a thing.
